Style and Layout
Do not care about it: use lyx or latex (texniccenter) (in linux use kile or the editor of your choice). Do not use MS-Word or OpenOffice.org. I advised a lot of theses. I can tell you, it is much more work to use these to get the same professional result. OpenOffice.org is nevertheless a very good choice for creating your drawings as it has a really nice pdf-export and an easy to use drawing mode. Avoid pixel graphics! Prefer Vector graphics. If you have to use pixel graphics (for example for screen shots, you took yourself), use the png format as it will not create ugly artifacts due to compression.
